On 24 October 2020, Honduras became the 50th state to ratify the treaty, triggering the process for entry into force.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the treaty’s entry into force on 22 January 2021, crowns a worldwide movement “to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons” and “is a tribute to the survivors of nuclear explosions and tests, many of whom advocated for this treaty”.
